Foxhall Newydd, Grade I listed mansion in Henllan, Wales.
Description
Foxhall Newydd is a Grade I listed mansion located on a hillside in Henllan, featuring limestone walls with sandstone accents arranged in an H-shaped plan. The structure sits at approximately 162 meters elevation and reflects the architectural ambitions of the late 16th century.
History
Construction of this grand residence began in 1592 under John Panton of Denbigh, though financial constraints prevented completion of the entire structure. Only the left cross-wing reached its finished state while the broader design remained incomplete.
Culture
The surviving wing displays intricate plasterwork and fireplace details that reflect the skilled craftsmanship of Welsh builders during the Elizabethan period. These decorative features remain visible in the rooms that still stand today.
Practical
The ruins sit approximately one kilometer southeast of Henllan village and are reached via a track heading west from the Foxhall settlement. Visiting on foot is best, and sturdy footwear is recommended due to the uneven terrain and hillside location.
Did you know?
Only the left cross-wing was actually completed and received full interior finishing with plasterwork and formal details. This makes the ruin notable because it shows how much care was invested in one section of an otherwise unfinished mansion.
