Elgandal Fort

Elgandal Fort, Hillfort in Karimnagar district, India

Elgandal Fort is a stone fortification built on a hilltop, with defensive walls, ancient gates, and remnants of military structures spread across the complex. The site features multiple architectural layers added over centuries by successive rulers who controlled the location.

The fort emerged about 400 years ago as a power center for successive kingdoms, including the Kakatiyas, Bahmanis, Qutb Shahis, and Mughals. Each ruling dynasty left its mark on the structures, shaping the site's physical appearance over time.

The fort contains temples for Neelakantha Swamy and Narasimha Swamy alongside burial sites of Muslim saints, showing how different communities coexisted here. The mix of Hindu and Islamic structures across the site tells a story of shared space and multiple faiths in one location.

Reaching the fort involves climbing a long flight of steps, best done during cooler winter months for comfortable exploration. Wear sturdy footwear and allow time for both the climb and walking around the structures on the hilltop.

The Alamgir Mosque within the fort complex has three minarets instead of the standard four found in most mosques. This architectural choice is uncommon and makes the structure stand out from typical mosque designs in the region.
