Aner Dam Wildlife Sanctuary, Protected wildlife area in Shirpur, Maharashtra, India
Aner Dam Wildlife Sanctuary is a protected area located in the southwestern Satpura hill ranges surrounding the Aner River catchment and its dam structure. The site covers approximately 83 square kilometers and combines forest areas with open landscapes shaped by the dam infrastructure.
The dam structure was completed in 1978 for regional water management. The protected area was formally established in 1986 to preserve the natural habitats surrounding the dam infrastructure.
The sanctuary plays an important role for local communities by supporting agriculture through dam water management. Native tree species like Acacia and Aegle trees remain an integral part of the landscape that people in the region depend on.
Visitors can reach the sanctuary most easily from Jalgaon railway station, located about 70 kilometers away and offering good train connections. Regular bus services run from nearby towns of Shirpur and Lasur to help travelers reach the entrance area.
The sanctuary connects with the neighboring Yawal Wildlife Sanctuary and forest areas of Madhya Pradesh, creating an important corridor for animal movements. This connection allows wildlife to migrate between different protected areas and access larger habitats.
