Fénis Castle

Fénis Castle is a pentagonal fortress with five towers, crenellated walls, and defensive structures surrounding an elegant medieval courtyard with decorative elements. The layout was designed to contain multiple levels and living spaces within its walls, offering visitors today a complete picture of medieval castle design.

The Challant family controlled the fortress from the 13th to the 18th century, transforming it from a purely military structure into a noble residence. This transformation reflects how many castles evolved as the region became more peaceful and the focus shifted from defense to living comfort.

The courtyard walls display medieval frescoes showing scenes of craftsmen at work and religious themes that reflect daily life of the time. These painted walls give visitors today a sense of how residents decorated their living spaces.

Visitors can explore well-preserved living quarters with multiple rooms and staircases that offer various views of castle life, with clear routes through the different levels. Most areas have steps and stairs, so visitors should prepare for climbing to see all parts of the fortress.

Despite sitting on flat terrain at about 540 meters elevation, the castle compensates for the lack of natural defensive advantages through massive walls and a thoughtful arrangement of towers. This shows how castle builders could create effective defenses even without hilltop locations.
