Pistoia Mountains Astronomical Observatory, Astronomical observatory and museum in Gavinana and San Marcello Pistoiese, Italy
The Pistoia Mountains Astronomical Observatory is a research facility in the mountains with two rotating domes housing telescopes for sky observation. Located at about 950 meters elevation, it contains two main telescopes of different sizes for scientific work and public viewing sessions.
The observatory began its development in the 1990s and was officially inaugurated in 2015. This project represented an important step forward for astronomical research in the region.
The observatory serves as a gathering place for people interested in astronomy from the surrounding region who come together to watch the sky and share their discoveries. It has become an important center for celestial research in the Apennines.
Visits work best on clear nights when visibility of the sky is optimal. It is advisable to bring warm clothing and check access times beforehand, as the facility is located at higher altitude.
Systematic observations of minor planets and comets conducted here have led to new astronomical findings. The work of the local research group has helped identify previously unknown objects in the sky.
