Castel Ivano, Medieval castle in Valsugana Valley, Italy
Castel Ivano is a stone fortress positioned on a strategic hilltop in the Valsugana Valley. The structure combines multiple courtyards, period rooms, and fortified sections with sweeping views toward the surrounding mountains.
The oldest section was built in the 6th century when the Lombards constructed the central tower during their control of northern Italy. Over time, successive rulers added layers to the structure, shaping its current form.
The Carraresi family coat of arms dating to 1375, carved with four wheels on the main tower, marks the family's long connection to the building. The rooms inside reflect this family legacy across centuries.
Visiting requires booking a guided tour in advance, with a minimum group size of 8 people for the tour to proceed. The visit lasts around 70 minutes, allowing time to explore the interior rooms and defensive sections.
The fortress continues to function as a private residence, and part of it includes a wine cellar stocked with local vintages from the Lagorai region. Tastings of these wines are offered to those taking the tour.
