Castelfranco

Castelfranco is a fortified structure built on a coastal promontory that overlooks the valleys and coastline of Finale Ligure. The fort contains exhibitions and documentation about the area's past, making it both an architectural landmark and a place to learn local history.

The Genoese Republic built this structure in the 14th century to strengthen control over the territory and counter rival powers in the region. Over time it served as a defensive position against maritime threats and attacks.

The fortress now functions as a cultural center displaying historical documents and photographs that tell the story of the surrounding region. Visitors can explore materials about local life and heritage through exhibits housed within its stone walls.

The fort sits on a hilltop reached by a short but steep walk from the town below, so comfortable shoes are recommended for the climb. The site is best visited during spring or autumn when the weather is mild and fewer visitors are present.

In 1745 the fort successfully defended itself against a major English naval attack, repelling warships that came to assault the coast. This rare military success shows how the small fortress withstood a much larger force.
