Castles in Montecchio Maggiore

Two medieval fortresses sit on neighboring hilltops in Vicenza province. Each fortress has its own structure and offers views of the surrounding landscape from its elevated position.

The fortifications began in the early second millennium as strategic control points. Later they were rebuilt and reinforced by the Verona-based Scaliger family to assert their regional power.

The two fortresses are rooted in literature, as a local writer found and wrote the story of two feuding families here. This work later inspired one of the world's most famous love dramas.

Both fortresses sit on hills and require a light hike to reach, especially when climbing from the village below. Visitors should expect uneven paths and stairs, so sturdy shoes and basic fitness help.

One of the fortresses houses a restaurant within its walls, where visitors can dine while seeing the old architecture around them. The other fortress features a tall central tower with carved stairs at its base.
