The Norman-Hohenstaufen Castle features six four-sided towers connected by curtain walls, with a central keep and a filled moat around its perimeter.
Byzantine general Niccolò Piccingli initiated the castle construction in 916 to protect Apulia from Saracen invasions before Norman and Hohenstaufen modifications.
The castle contains a chapel dedicated to Saint Nicholas, established after the arrival of the saint's relics in Bari during 1087.
The Municipality of Sannicandro di Bari maintains the castle, which opens for visitors to explore its medieval military architecture and exhibitions.
A rescue tunnel connects the baronial palace section of the castle to the Church of Saint John, located outside the fortress walls.
