Rocca di Cerere Geopark, UNESCO Global Geopark in Enna, Italy.
Rocca di Cerere Geopark is a protected area stretching across the Erei Mountains in central Sicily, covering nine municipalities with varied rock formations and Mediterranean vegetation. The territory features hiking trails, eight additional protected areas, archaeological sites, and museums to explore.
The region holds over 150 archaeological sites from ancient civilizations, including the Villa Romana del Casale and the Greek city of Morgantina. These discoveries show how important the area was in ancient times.
Local communities here maintain old traditions such as Holy Week ceremonies in Enna and prepare symbolic breads during the Tavolate di San Giuseppe. These festivities show how people keep their history and beliefs alive today.
Visitors should hike on well-marked trails and allow time to explore the museums and protected areas. The best time to visit is spring or autumn when temperatures are more comfortable.
Lake Pergusa is Sicily's only natural lake and sits surrounded by gypsum and sulfur plateaus formed when the Mediterranean dried out. This rare mix of water and mineral formations is found nowhere else on the island.
