Terre di Castelli, Municipal union in Modena Province, Italy
Terre di Castelli is a union of eight municipalities across the province of Modena, with Vignola serving as its administrative center. The area sits in rolling hills with farmland, small villages, and historical structures spread throughout the territory.
The municipal union was formed in 2001, initially bringing together five municipalities that later expanded to include Guiglia, Marano sul Panaro, and Zocca. The individual towns trace their roots back to medieval times.
The towns here are known for their traditional balsamic vinegar production, where visitors can watch how the vinegar ages in wooden barrels across different rooms. This craft is deeply rooted in local identity and has shaped the economy for centuries.
The area is accessible by car or bus, with Vignola serving as a good starting point for exploration. Most villages lie close to each other, making it possible to visit several places in one day.
Several medieval castles dot the villages of this region, including Levizzano Rangone and Spilamberto, which still retain their original stone walls and towers. These fortifications offer glimpses of medieval construction and can often be viewed from the outside or through guided visits.
