Santuario della Comparsa, Catholic sanctuary in Montagnaga, Italy.
The Santuario della Comparsa is a sanctuary and church building in Baselga di Piné, in the Trentino region, built on a Greek cross plan with a central nave of five bays and a semicircular apse. Inside, a baroque altar stands at the center, surrounded by paintings by regional artists and carved plasterwork.
The sanctuary was built starting in 1730, following reports by a local shepherdess who said she had seen visions of the Virgin Mary the year before. Those accounts led the community to establish this place as a pilgrimage site.
The sanctuary holds thousands of votive offerings left by pilgrims over the centuries as a sign of their devotion to the Virgin Mary. These offerings are still visible inside, giving the place the feel of an active pilgrimage site rather than a museum.
The sanctuary sits in the highlands of Trentino and is easiest to reach in the warmer months, when mountain roads are in good condition. It is worth checking local opening times before visiting, as they can vary depending on the season.
The plasterwork inside was carried out in the 18th century by a craftsman known for baroque ornamental work, and is considered among the finest of its kind in the region. A painting of the Madonna in the southern chapel, based on a well-known artistic composition, draws many visitors to that corner of the church.
