The aquarium displays 400 species and 10,000 marine creatures, including hammerhead sharks, spotted eagle rays, and various Japanese Sea inhabitants within a shark-shaped building.
The Shimane Aquarium Aquas started operations on April 15, 2000, establishing itself as the largest aquarium facility in the Chugoku-Shikoku region of Japan.
The facility features a dedicated tank called 'Sea of Mythology' that presents sharks mentioned in ancient Sanin region legends and stories.
Located 10 minutes by foot from JR Namiko Station, the aquarium operates from 9:00 to 17:00, with extended hours until 18:00 during summer months.
The facility houses beluga whales performing bubble ring demonstrations, making it the only aquarium in western Japan where visitors can observe these Arctic mammals.
