Higashi-Takasu Bridge, Steel plate girder bridge in Amagasaki, Japan.
Higashi-Takasu Bridge is a steel plate girder structure spanning the Higashi-Hori Canal and connecting the districts of Takasu-cho and Otakasu-cho. A movable section on the south side lifts upward to allow vessels to pass through the waterway during designated times.
The first structure was built in 1956 and replaced by the current bascule design in 1966 to handle growing maritime traffic. It was repaired after the 1995 Great Hanshin earthquake and has continued operating since then.
The bridge represents an engineering solution that shaped how the district connects its communities on either side of the waterway. Local people use it daily as a practical link between neighborhoods, making it part of the rhythm of life here.
The bridge is easily reached from surrounding streets and offers ample width for pedestrians and vehicles to cross. If you want to see the moving section in action, check the local schedule for the lift times and position yourself nearby to watch.
The bridge received recognition as a Civil Engineering Heritage site in 2023 by the Japan Society of Civil Engineers. This honor acknowledges an engineering solution to an everyday traffic problem that often goes unnoticed by passersby.
