San Patrizio Sanctuary, Medieval sanctuary in Colzate, Italy.
San Patrizio Sanctuary is a church building perched on a hilltop in Valle Seriana, where stone walls blend seamlessly with the rocky terrain surrounding it. The structure combines medieval and Renaissance elements added through centuries of construction.
The sanctuary began as a small shrine in the 13th century and underwent major reconstruction between 1580 and 1600. These expansions transformed it into the building visible today.
The sanctuary contains a 1514 fresco of the Last Judgement by Jacopino Scipioni, depicting Christ, angels, and detailed scenes of salvation and damnation.
Access is via a paved road from Colzate, with parking available at the base of the hill. The elevated location provides views of the surrounding valley during the approach to the entrance.
Inside is a grotto-like chapel dating to the 13th century with medieval frescoes influenced by 1493 woodcuts. This early artistic source shows how artistic inspiration traveled across distances and different art forms.
