Wanitsuka Yama, Mountain summit in Miyazaki Prefecture, Japan
Wanitsuka Yama is a forested mountain summit in Miyazaki Prefecture, on the island of Kyushu, rising to 1,118 meters (3,668 feet) above sea level. Several hiking routes wind up through dense forest to reach the top.
The region around this mountain has been settled since ancient times and appears in classical Japanese chronicles describing the legendary origins of the imperial line. Those texts place key mythic events in the Miyazaki Plain that lies below the summit.
The name contains the character for "crocodile" (wani), pointing to old myths rooted in this part of Kyushu. Shrines linked to early Japanese legend can be found in the surrounding area and are still visited today.
The eastern side of the mountain offers the most direct access to the trails, which are open throughout the year. Starting early in the day is a good idea in summer, as heat and humidity tend to build through the afternoon.
On a clear day, the view from the top reaches across the Miyazaki Plain all the way to the Pacific Ocean, which is rare for a summit so covered in forest. The opening at the top is small, so the view appears suddenly and without warning as you step out of the trees.
