Kamo Aquarium

Kamo Aquarium, Public aquarium in Tsuruoka, Japan.

Kamo Aquarium is a public facility in Tsuruoka dedicated to displaying jellyfish across two exhibition floors. Specialized tanks with circular viewing windows showcase over 60 species in carefully designed environments.

The building opened in 1930 as a general aquarium facility. Facing economic difficulties decades later, the operation shifted to focus exclusively on jellyfish, transforming its purpose and drawing renewed visitor interest.

The facility weaves marine life into the local food experience, with the restaurant serving dishes built around jellyfish that reflect the region's coastal traditions. This approach shows how the sea creatures are integrated into everyday life rather than existing only behind glass.

The best way to reach this facility is by bus from Tsuruoka Station, which takes around 40 minutes. Buses run regularly throughout the day, so you have flexibility when planning your visit without excessive waiting times.

One tank in the facility measures 5 meters across and holds over 10,000 moon jellyfish of a single species. This immense circular basin creates a mesmerizing display as thousands of animals drift together in coordinated movement.
