益田家のモチノキ, Sacred tree in Totsuka-ku, Japan
The Masuda family tree is a Japanese holly located near the historic Tokaido Road intersection in Yokohama. It displays the characteristic thick trunk and dense foliage typical of mature specimens of this species found throughout the region.
The tree received official protection as a Natural Monument of Kanagawa Prefecture starting in 1981 and maintained this status for more than three decades. Damage from unauthorized cutting in 2017 led to its removal from the protected list a few years later.
The tree holds significance for local residents who value its deep roots in the community and visit to connect with the area's natural heritage. It serves as a focal point where people reflect on their relationship with the surrounding environment.
The site is accessible by bus with a brief walk from the nearest stop to the tree. Since it sits in a residential area, visitors should be respectful and avoid peak times if planning to visit.
The tree was given a second chance through a cloning project where branches were collected for propagation. New plants were successfully grown and may be replanted in the area in the future.
