Museum of Contemporary Art Tokyo, Art museum in Kiba Park, Tokyo, Japan
The Museum of Contemporary Art Tokyo is an art museum in Kiba Park, Tokyo, that presents over 5,600 works by Japanese and international creators active since 1945. The building organizes its space into permanent collection galleries and temporary exhibition rooms, where painting, sculpture, photography, and new media share the five floors.
The institution opened on March 18, 1995, in a purpose-built structure designed by Takahiko Yanagisawa within Kiba Park. Its founding responded to the need for a dedicated space in the capital where postwar Japanese and global art production could be shown and studied.
The name reflects the institution's focus on art created after World War II, covering painting, sculpture, photography, and multimedia work. Visitors walk through galleries that show how Japanese artists responded to global movements while developing their own visual language during the second half of the twentieth century.
Access is easiest from Kiba Station on the Tozai Line or Kiyosumi-Shirakawa Station on the Hanzomon and Oedo lines, both within walking distance. The institution is open Tuesday through Sunday and offers coat storage, seating areas, and rest spaces throughout the galleries.
An on-site library collects exhibition catalogues, art journals, and monographs on postwar and recent art, open to visitors for research. Documentation facilities track exhibition histories and artist biographies, helping deepen understanding of current developments in visual creation.
