Kasamatsu Jin'ya

Kasamatsu Jin'ya, Historic government office in Kasamatsu, Japan

Kasamatsu Jin'ya is an administrative building from the Edo period built with traditional wooden structures, sliding doors, and tatami mats. The complex includes multiple rooms and gardens that display the typical layout of regional government headquarters from that era.

The building was constructed during the Edo period and served as an administrative seat for local officials. During the Meiji Restoration in the 19th century, it lost its original function and was later preserved.

The building shows how local administrators worked and used their spaces in daily operations. Visitors today see areas where decisions were made and where family life took place.

The grounds are easily navigable on foot with clear pathways through the various sections. Visitors should wear sturdy shoes and remember that shoes must be removed in some interior spaces.

The floor plan shows a clear division between formal administrative rooms and the official's private living quarters. This spatial separation reveals how boundaries between public and private life were actually drawn.
