Astravas Manor, Romantic manor in Astravas, Lithuania
Astravas Manor is a two-story residence in romantic style situated on the northern shore of Lake Širvėna, featuring a mezzanine, belvedere tower, and brick facade inspired by Italian villas. The building displays refined proportions and thoughtful composition that makes use of its waterfront setting.
Construction took place between 1849 and 1862 by the Tyszkiewicz family after they acquired the Biržai lands from the Radziwiłł family in 1811. The manor reflects the development of romantic architectural style in Lithuania during the 1800s.
The name derives from a Lithuanian word meaning bay, reflecting its waterside setting. Today visitors experience how the building relates to its natural surroundings, with the footbridge serving as a viewing point where the lake and architecture create a cohesive landscape.
The interior is not open to visitors, but a wooden footbridge stretching 525 meters across the water provides the best views of the building and lake. This walkway allows you to observe the architecture from different angles and explore the surrounding landscape.
Two stone lions from Saint Petersburg once guarded the entrance, now replaced by concrete copies while the originals are preserved in Kaunas War Museum. This change shows how precious historical artworks are protected and relocated for safekeeping.
