Žemieji Paneriai

Žemieji Paneriai is a memorial site in Vilnius, Lithuania, situated in a forested area southwest of the city. The grounds contain several monuments, a museum, and informational displays that document events during the Second World War.

Between 1941 and 1944, thousands of people were killed at this location by German occupation forces during the war. The site later became a place of remembrance and an important center for historical memory in Lithuania.

The name comes from a nearby settlement and commemorates those who lost their lives here. The memorials and museum help visitors understand and remember this history through education and reflection.

The site is accessible on foot with pathways leading through the forest to the memorials and museum. Comfortable walking shoes are recommended since the terrain is uneven and includes several hills throughout the grounds.

Before World War II, the ground was a well-known brick quarry that supplied building material for many of Vilnius' older structures. This earlier use shapes the soil and landscape visible at the memorial today.
