Букчайский мост, Steel footbridge in Vilnius City Municipality, Lithuania
The Bukchaj Bridge is a steel footbridge spanning the Neris River in Vilnius, measuring 150 meters in length and 5 meters in width while connecting both riverbanks. The structure displays typical industrial construction features from its era.
The footbridge was built in 1953 and originally carried thermal pipelines from a power plant to greenhouse facilities on the opposite riverbank. It was a key part of the area's infrastructure planning at that time.
The structure stands near an old power plant building, reflecting the industrial period of mid-20th century Lithuania. It reminds visitors of a time when such facilities shaped the city's character.
The structure has been closed to pedestrians since 2008 due to safety concerns and remains inaccessible. Visitors can view it from the riverbanks but should not attempt to enter.
The footbridge never received official approval for public use and was designed solely as infrastructure support from the beginning. This original purpose makes it a rare example of a bridge that was never intended as a public crossing.
