Church of St. Joseph, Palūšė

The Church of St. Joseph sits on a hillside overlooking Lake Lūšiai and displays traditional Lithuanian wooden construction with a three-nave hall plan and two towers. Inside, a flat wooden plank ceiling and exposed wall beams create the main visual character, alongside three neo-baroque altars placed throughout the interior.

Construction took place between 1747 and 1757, funded by priest Juozapas Stockis-Bazilevskis who paid for it himself. The structure was built using only hand tools and wooden joinery, avoiding metal nails entirely.

The inscription above the main door reads 'Enter being good, Leave being better,' expressing how faith and community values are woven into daily life here. This phrase shapes how people relate to the place and what it means to them.

Visitors can enter to examine the wooden ceiling details, exposed wall beams, and altar arrangements inside. Regular religious services are held, so it is best to plan your visit around these times or contact ahead to check access.

The octagonal bell tower was added in 1800 and reflects design ideas from ancient Lithuanian wooden fortifications. This blend of church and fortress elements creates a silhouette rarely seen among other Lithuanian churches.
