Vëlodukt

The Vëlodukt is a footbridge and cycling path in Esch-sur-Alzette that connects two neighborhoods while passing 7.5 meters above railway tracks. The steel and concrete structure spans 1,200 meters and uses ramps, stairs, and elevators to serve people with different mobility needs.

Construction began in June 2021 and the bridge opened officially on December 23, 2022. It was developed as part of efforts to strengthen sustainable transportation options in the region.

The bridge represents a commitment to moving away from car dependency and toward cleaner travel methods across the city. Visitors notice how it shapes daily routines by offering a direct route that feels separate from road traffic.

The bridge is accessible at all times and welcomes both pedestrians and cyclists of all ability levels with barrier-free access. The multiple entry points make it easy to find a convenient starting place from either side.

The steel support pylons were designed to resemble tree trunks, creating an ecological design concept rarely noticed on first sight. This thoughtful detail shows how environmental values shaped the architectural choices.
