Lustūzis Cliff, Protected sandstone cliff in Līgatne, Latvia.
Lustūzis Cliff is a protected sandstone formation stretching roughly 250 meters along the Līgatne River bank and reaching about 50 meters into the forest edge on both sides. The structure displays natural layering and bears numerous hand-carved cavities that define its character.
Local residents carved storage spaces into the sandstone walls over many generations, developing cavities at two distinct vertical levels within the rock face. This long-standing practice demonstrates how the geological site served the community's food preservation needs for centuries.
The cliff's alternative name 'Cave Rock' comes from the carved storage niches that residents created over generations to preserve food through winter. These hand-made spaces show how local people adapted the natural sandstone for their practical needs.
The site is best viewed from a designated platform at the base, which has been arranged for safe observation and access. This setup protects the fragile sandstone from additional erosion caused by foot traffic.
This is Latvia's only documented location where storage cavities were carved into a single rock face at two separate elevation levels. This unusual two-tiered arrangement remains unmatched elsewhere in the country.
