Citadel of Riga, Military fortification in Riga, Latvia.
The Citadel of Riga is a military fortress with six bastions and several other fortification elements stretching along the Daugava River. The site is bordered by moats and ramparts that protect the structure.
Construction of the fortress began in 1650 following engineer Rodenburg's plan and it was already the third fortification built at this location. It arose during a time when the region was contested by different powers.
The grounds show how the Baltic region was once defended, with cannons and bastions still visible today. Visitors can walk through these spaces and understand how soldiers once kept watch here to protect the city.
The fortress is accessible via a drawbridge and the King's Gate, which is built into the rampart structure. Wear sturdy shoes when visiting, as the grounds are uneven and involve quite a bit of walking.
In 1709 a massive quantity of gunpowder stored in a powder tower exploded, causing severe damage to the structure. This event left lasting marks that visitors can still see today.
