Komratskoe Reservoir is a man-made lake built in 1957 near Comrat in Gagauzia to supply water for irrigation and fishing. It spans about 3.65 kilometers with an earthen dam approximately 410 meters long and typically holds shallow water with silty bottom conditions.
The reservoir was created in 1957 on the site of two small drying ponds along the Yalpug River. By 1983 the average depth reached about 1.76 meters, but water levels declined significantly, falling below 1 meter by 2000 as siltation increased.
The lake is accessible from the right bank where a main road runs alongside, offering spots for fishing and casual walks along the shore. The left bank features steep terrain with ravines, while the right bank is gentler and more suitable for visitors.
The water comes heavily laden with clay particles from eroded gullies after rains, which causes rapid silting of the basin. A major dam failure in 2017 during heavy flooding required extensive repairs and revealed the fragility of aging water infrastructure.
