Mečkin Kamen, Memorial monument in Kruševo, North Macedonia
Mečkin Kamen is a memorial site on a hill near the town of Kruševo in North Macedonia, sitting at around 1,400 meters (4,600 feet) above sea level. It features a large stone sculpture of an insurgent holding a rock, created by sculptor Dimo Todorovski, and can be seen from the surrounding area.
The site marks the spot where Pitu Guli and his fighters made their last stand against Ottoman forces during the Ilinden Uprising of 1903. They were surrounded and fell here, and the place has carried that memory ever since.
For many people in North Macedonia, this place carries a strong sense of national memory tied to the fighters of the Ilinden Uprising. Visitors often come not just to see the sculpture, but to stand where the final battle took place.
The site is a few kilometers from central Kruševo and is most easily reached by car, with parking available on-site. The terrain around the monument is open and hilly, so comfortable footwear is a good idea for walking around the area.
The name Mečkin Kamen means "bear's rock" in Macedonian, referring to a legend about a bear that once lived on this hill before it became linked to the last battle. This connection between the wild animal and the fighters' story is part of how local people remember the place.
