Isar, Archaeological site in Marvinci, North Macedonia.
Isar is an archaeological site on a dominant hill beside the Vardar River with extensive remains of ancient structures and defensive fortifications. Excavations have revealed building foundations, walls, and defense works that show how the settlement was laid out.
The site was inhabited from the Bronze Age through late Antiquity and shows a long history of human settlement in the region. Systematic excavations between 1977 and 1986 uncovered over 200 graves and numerous artifacts that document these different periods.
The temple built around 181 AD shows how ancient inhabitants constructed their buildings and the role faith played in their daily lives. The ruins offer insight into religious practices that mattered to people living in this region at that time.
The site is located about 7 kilometers southwest of Valandovo and can be reached by local transportation. The hill requires some walking, but the ruins are relatively easy to explore if you move carefully over the uneven ground.
Among the finds is the grave of a priestess with rare ritual objects that shed light on religious ceremonies in the ancient settlement. Such detailed burial goods are rare and help archaeologists understand the importance of religious leaders in that society.
