Hkamti Long, Historical settlement in Shan States, Myanmar.
Hkamti Long is a historical settlement in the Shan States located in Myanmar's mountainous north. The town of Putao serves as the main center in this remote territory.
The territory formed from seven small principalities including Lokhun, Mansi, and Lon Kyein that came under Shan rule around 1300. After the Konbaung dynasty collapsed, this region escaped British colonial control because of its isolated position north of Myitkyina District.
The name means "Great Place of Gold" in the Hkamti Khamti language, reflecting the mineral wealth of the region. Local trade routes once showed the prosperity that mining resources brought to these communities.
The area is difficult to reach and travel through mountainous terrain requires patience. Visitors should prepare for basic conditions and consider local guidance when exploring this remote region.
The ethnic makeup shifted over time as Kachin and other groups moved into the area. These demographic changes shaped the cultural diversity that visitors can observe in local communities today.
