Floodplain meadows of River Dviete

The Dviete floodplain stretches along the left bank of the Daugava River and contains extensive grasslands, wetlands, and river channels that form a complex natural landscape. The terrain shows open meadows, water bodies, and natural habitats that change with the seasons and water levels.

The area gained official protection in 2004 to preserve the natural floodplain meadows and their ecological value for the region. This action secured its role as a vital habitat and corridor for wildlife and migratory birds.

Local communities have shaped these meadows through generations of grazing livestock, keeping wild horses and cattle in the grasslands as part of traditional land use. This practice remains visible today in how the landscape looks and how people interact with the land.

In spring, floodwaters transform the meadows into temporary lakes and shallow pools that become crucial resting spots for migrating birds. These seasonal floods create short-lived but vital feeding and resting grounds for thousands of birds traveling long distances.
