G5, Neolithic dolmen in Muzeeaquarium Delfzijl, Netherlands
G5 is a Neolithic stone tomb now displayed at Muzeeaquarium in Delfzijl and represents the northernmost megalithic structure in the Netherlands. The structure consists of large stones arranged in the characteristic way of that era, forming burial chambers.
The tomb was discovered during excavations in the 1980s near a monastery site that had been destroyed centuries before. These excavations revealed that the region had a long history of human settlement and use.
This structure shows how early farming communities in the northern region honored their dead and what role such places held in their society. The stone arrangement reveals beliefs about the afterlife and community identity.
The stone monument can be viewed as part of the archaeological collection in the museum. The location is easily accessible and housed within a museum that opens regularly for visitors.
A key part of this monument, the stone chest, is now kept in a separate location and cannot be seen where it was originally found. This separation tells a story about how archaeological finds became distributed across different institutions.
