Description
Castle of Rijckholt is a medieval structure with a square residential tower featuring walls two meters thick, surrounded by a double moat system. The main wing in its current form dates from 1683, while the coach house was constructed in the early 18th century.
History
The main structure was destroyed in 1485 during conflicts and rebuilt in 1489. The building was later expanded and reshaped during the 17th century.
Culture
The chapel in the left wing was dedicated to Saint Rombaut and features stucco ceilings with family monograms of the de Bounam-de Moffarts. These decorative elements reflect the wealth and artistic taste of those who lived here.
Practical
The coach house today functions as a conference and event center, offering spaces for various functions. Visitors should note the well-preserved exterior walls and moat system while exploring the grounds.
