Wereldmuseum Rotterdam, Ethnographic museum in Rotterdam, Netherlands
Wereldmuseum Rotterdam is an ethnographic museum in the center of Rotterdam, displaying objects, artworks, and artifacts from Africa, Asia, the Americas, and Oceania. The collections are arranged across multiple floors of a historic building on the Willemskade, organized around regional and thematic exhibitions.
The building opened in 1885 as a yacht club before being converted into a museum focused on international cultures. Over the course of the 20th century, the collection grew through donations and expeditions closely tied to Rotterdam's role as a port.
The museum name simply means "World Museum" in Dutch, reflecting Rotterdam's long ties to distant places through its port. Visitors today walk through rooms where objects from Africa, Asia, and the Americas sit side by side, showing how trade and travel brought very different worlds into contact.
The museum sits directly on the waterfront in central Rotterdam and is easy to reach on foot from Rotterdam Centraal station. Allowing at least half a day is a good idea, as the exhibitions cover several floors and there is a lot to take in.
The Wereldmuseum Rotterdam is part of a network of four Dutch museums that have worked together since 2023, sharing collections across institutions. This means that some objects rotate between partner venues, so what is on display during one visit may not be there on a return trip.
