Oud Verlaat, Rural hamlet in Zuidplas, Netherlands
Oud Verlaat is a rural hamlet in Zuidplas located between the Rotte River and Zevenhuizerplas lake in South Holland. The settlement includes a primary school called De Nessevliet, a community center known as De Vierkap, and a reformed chapel positioned along Vlietkade.
The settlement received its name when a new waterway was constructed near Zevenhuizen, transforming the original Zwalisch Verlaat into the old water route. This naming reflected the geographical changes that occurred as water management developed in the area.
The historic inn Sootjesvis displays a characteristic stepped gable design that reflects building traditions of this region. This oldest structure in the hamlet continues to serve as a meeting place for residents and visitors.
The hamlet is most easily explored on foot or by bicycle with straightforward paths connecting main facilities. The flat, open landscape makes it simple to move about in any direction.
A cable ferry crossed the Rotte River between this hamlet and Bergschenhoek from 1884 to 1966 under the operation of Janus Blom. This service provided a vital link for residents and goods traveling across the waterway.
