Keizersbolwerk, Vlissingen, 16th century fortification in Vlissingen, Netherlands
Keizersbolwerk is a brick fortification with high walls that once defended the harbor of Vlissingen. The structure contains several casemates built into its walls and has been modified and reinforced over different periods.
The fortification was built in 1548 under Emperor Charles V to protect the harbor. During later periods, casemates were added to strengthen its defenses and walls were heightened.
The monument houses a statue of Admiral Michiel de Ruyter from 1842 and an iron harbor light from 1880 at its summit.
Visitors can explore the restored casemates that now house exhibitions and displays. The site is generally accessible from the outside, though interior access may have specific visiting times.
The structure remains the only preserved sea gate in Vlissingen, where passengers from anchored ships historically entered the city.
