The Water tower Stadskanaal is a brick structure that rises 43 meters tall and holds a concrete tank at the top for water storage. The building sits on Ceresstraat and features an interior staircase that visitors can climb.
Built in 1935 by architect H.F. Mertens for the Groningen Water Company, the tower supplied water to the region until 1987. Following its decommissioning, the structure was preserved as a protected monument.
The structure exemplifies Business Expressionist architecture through its round shaft, brick buttresses, and decorative window arrangements characteristic of 1930s Dutch design.
Visitors can climb a staircase of about 208 steps to reach an observation platform that offers views toward Groningen city on clear days. The building is easy to access and provides good orientation for explorers.
The entrance pathways are lined with brick walls and feature plant-covered pergolas that create a garden-like quality to the approach. Inside the tower, nine concrete columns support the water tank and create a remarkably solid structure.
