Hagesteinsebrug, Highway bridge in Nieuwegein, Netherlands.
The Hagesteinsebrug is a highway bridge that crosses the Lek River in Nieuwegein, built from steel beams with two parallel decks. The structure spans about 740 meters and allows river traffic to pass underneath thanks to its height above the water.
Construction of this bridge began in 1975 and was finished in 1981, forming part of the A27 motorway that links Vianen and Nieuwegein. It became an important link for traffic moving through this region of the Netherlands.
The bridge represents Dutch engineering excellence in water management, connecting communities across the Lek River while maintaining navigation clearance of 15.82 meters.
The bridge handles daily traffic with multiple lanes in each direction, including additional lanes during peak hours to manage flow. Pedestrians and cyclists are not permitted since it is a motorway section.
The bridge is currently undergoing complete replacement with two new parallel concrete structures, expected to be finished by 2027. This modernization project is a major undertaking that strengthens Dutch infrastructure for future generations.
