Boshoverheide

Boshoverheide, Nature reserve in Weert, Netherlands.

Boshoverheide is a protected nature area covering roughly 200 hectares, where forests, heathlands, fens, and marshes coexist in distinct zones. These different landscape types create separate habitats that support different plants and wildlife.

The site began as a settlement and burial ground around 3,000 years ago, with Bronze Age grave mounds still visible across the land. Later human activities and natural changes gradually shaped the landscape into what exists today.

The reserve shows how people have lived with this landscape for thousands of years, with traces of past settlements visible throughout the terrain. Walking here reveals how local communities shaped and used these different habitats over time.

The area offers marked trails for hiking, cycling, and horseback riding with different difficulty levels to suit various visitors. Wearing proper footwear and being prepared for wet ground conditions helps ensure a comfortable visit.

Military training exercises still take place in certain sections while visitors explore other parts of the reserve for recreation. This unusual arrangement shows how conservation and active use manage to coexist in the same location.
