Passewaaij, Rural hamlet in Tiel, Netherlands
Passewaaij is a rural hamlet in Tiel, located in Gelderland province, spread across around 183 hectares (452 acres). The area contains scattered houses, open farmland, and small patches of woodland that characterize the Dutch countryside.
The settlement developed as an independent rural community under the governance of Wadenoijen until 1956. At that time, administrative changes led to its integration into the municipality of Tiel.
The name comes from Middle Dutch, where 'pas' means a path and 'waai' refers to a dike breach. This origin reflects how water management shaped the local identity.
The area connects to Tiel through regular bus services, and a local shopping center provides basic supplies for residents and visitors. The flat terrain makes it easy to explore on foot or by bicycle through the surrounding landscape.
The adjacent Wetland Passewaaij was created in 1996 as a nature development area serving regional ecological needs. This protected landscape plays an important role in managing water levels and supporting wildlife habitats.
