Spijkenisse Boekenberg public library, Public library in Spijkenisse, Netherlands
Spijkenisse Boekenberg is a public library with a distinctive glass pyramid shape in Spijkenisse. The interior features a spiral pathway winding through five floors of books that leads to a café at the top.
The library opened in 2012 and marked a turning point for Spijkenisse. This new building helped transform the local market square from a farming village into a modern urban center.
The building's transparent walls allow passersby to see inside and discover the bookshelves from the street. This openness invites people to explore and makes reading a visible part of community life.
The complex includes an environmental education center, chess club, auditorium, and meeting spaces alongside the collections. Visitors should allow time to explore all floors and take in the view from the café at the top.
The bookshelves were made from recycled flowerpots and form a continuous path of approximately 480 meters through the building. This unconventional construction also serves as handrails and information desks.
