Aqueduct Vechtzicht, Navigable aqueduct in Muiden, Netherlands
Aqueduct Vechtzicht is a bridge structure that carries the A1 motorway beneath the Vecht river, measuring 200 meters long and 65 meters wide. The design allows traffic to flow in multiple lanes on each side while boats and ships pass underneath in the waterway.
This structure was built between 2013 and 2016, replacing two earlier bascule bridges that had previously carried traffic across the river. The rebuild became necessary to create a more modern and efficient transportation solution.
The name comes from a farm that once occupied this location before infrastructure development forced its relocation. The structure itself has become part of the local landscape, linking the river to the surrounding natural areas.
The best way to observe this structure is from the riverbanks or by boat, since the road traffic on top is not directly accessible to pedestrians. Visitors should note that the area around the motorway is busy, so safe viewpoints along the water are recommended.
The structure includes an ecological corridor roughly 40 meters wide, with a 15-meter water section that links two nearby water systems together. This natural passage beneath the motorway allows local wildlife and plants to move between the water bodies.
