Pontsteiger building, Residential skyscraper in Houthaven, Netherlands
The Pontsteiger is a residential high-rise with 26 floors featuring a geometric H-shaped form overlooking the IJ river. Its structure is defined by balconies facing different directions, each providing views for individual apartments.
The building was completed in 2018, marking the transformation of the former industrial Houthaven district into a modern residential neighborhood. This development was part of a larger urban renewal that revitalized the harbor area.
The facade uses special bricks from Koninklijke Tichelaar, linking contemporary design with Dutch craft traditions. Residents and visitors encounter this blend of modern style and traditional material work every day.
Visitors can view the building from outside and explore the surrounding waterside paths, which are easily accessible. The public space around the building offers places to rest and views of the water.
The first residential level sits 8 meters above the water surface, making lower apartments appear to float directly over the river. This design creates an unexpected feeling of weightlessness for such a substantial structure.
