Pontsteiger building, Residential skyscraper in Houthaven, Netherlands
The Pontsteiger is a residential tower on the banks of the IJ river in Amsterdam, with a distinctive H-shaped silhouette. It has 26 floors and is wrapped with balconies facing different directions, giving each apartment its own view of the water or the city.
The Pontsteiger was completed in 2018 and stands in the former Houthaven industrial port, which has been gradually transformed into a residential neighborhood in recent years. The building was part of a wider plan to rework the old harbor land just west of Amsterdam's center.
The facade is clad with bricks from Koninklijke Tichelaar, one of the oldest ceramics makers in the Netherlands. Anyone walking past can notice the unusual texture of the surface, which stands out clearly from ordinary modern concrete.
The Pontsteiger is easy to spot from the waterside path along the IJ, which runs directly in front of the building. The surrounding area is easy to reach on foot or by bike, and the path along the water gives a clear view of the full structure from different angles.
The first residential floor sits about 8 meters above the water, so part of the building appears to hover directly over the IJ. This effect is especially noticeable when looking at the building from the water, for example from a passing ferry.
