Karawari Lodge, Remote riverside lodge in East Sepik Province, Papua New Guinea
Karawari Lodge sits about 300 meters above the Karawari River and overlooks dense tropical rainforest in a place without roads or modern infrastructure. The property consists of ten cottages equipped with modern bathrooms and electricity powered by generators.
The lodge was established in 1970 by Trans Niugini Tours and created a connection point between international visitors and the traditional communities of the Sepik region. Since then, it has served as a gateway for travelers seeking to experience this remote area.
The main building mirrors the design of a traditional spirit house and displays numerous Sepik artifacts including masks, drums, and ceremonial objects gathered from local communities. Walking through the lodge, you encounter the artistic traditions that continue to shape daily life in the region.
You can reach the property only through the private airstrip or by river transport, as there are no road connections to the area. It is wise to be flexible with arrival plans and prepare for limited supplies in this remote location.
The surrounding rainforests contain about 229 bird species, including the twelve-wired bird of paradise, which you can observe on guided boat trips along the waterways. This abundance of birdlife makes the area remarkable for those interested in wildlife.
