Tomb of the Unknown Soldier, Warsaw, Military memorial in Pilsudski Square, Warsaw, Poland.
The Tomb of the Unknown Soldier is a memorial on Piłsudski Square in Warsaw, Poland, built from white marble. The remaining arches show inscriptions with names of battles and are surrounded by an open colonnade.
The inauguration took place in 1925 in the presence of high-ranking representatives from several European countries. These three arches are the only part of the Saxon Palace that survived World War II.
The flame burns continuously since 1925 to remember fallen soldiers from different periods. Guards stand watch every day and change posts each hour in a solemn ceremony.
The square is accessible at all times and the changing of the guard takes place on the hour. Visitors may lay flowers or read the inscriptions on the arches.
Beneath the arches lies soil from battlefields across Poland, gathered after World War I. The remains belong to an unidentified soldier who fell in 1918 defending Lwów.
