Historical Museum in Sanok, History museum in Royal Castle, Sanok, Poland
The Historical Museum in Sanok occupies a medieval castle on a hill and displays collections of religious art, historical objects, and contemporary works. The exhibitions span multiple floors and combine different artistic traditions with everyday items from several centuries.
The institution was founded in 1934 as the Museum of Sanok Land and is housed in a castle that King Casimir the Great transformed into a stone fortress in the medieval period. The location later became a central place for preserving the history and culture of the region.
The museum displays a significant collection of Orthodox and Greek Catholic icons from the region of southeastern Poland and Ukraine. These religious artworks come from churches and monasteries along the borderlands and reflect the communities that lived there.
Access to the museum is available from April through October with varying opening times depending on the day of the week. It is helpful to check in advance which days and hours suit your visit.
The museum houses one of the world's largest collections of works by Polish artist Zdzisław Beksiński with hundreds of paintings, drawings, and photographs. This extensive collection allows visitors to explore the artistic development and range of work by this significant artist.
