St. Mary Church in Bolesławiec, Gothic basilica in Bolesławiec, Poland
St. Mary Church in Bolesławiec is a stone building with three naves and a 55-meter-high tower constructed in Gothic style. The architecture displays characteristic features of the Lusatian-Saxon building tradition from the medieval period.
The original structure from the 13th century was destroyed during Hussite raids in 1429, followed by reconstruction completed between 1432 and 1442. The rebuilding process restored the building to its gothic form during this critical medieval period.
The interior contains baroque altars with the main altar displaying the Assumption of Mary, while the walls hold numerous epitaphs from the 16th and 17th centuries that reflect the piety of earlier generations.
The church sits at the highest point of the Old Town center and serves as a natural landmark for orienting yourself in the historic district. Its elevated location makes it visible from many parts of the town and simple to locate.
The Mary Bell weighing 1,002 kilograms hangs in the tower and stands as one of the most notable bells in the region. In October 2012, the building received the status of Minor Basilica, an honor bestowed on relatively few churches.
