Basilica Cathedral of St. Mary of the Assumption

The Basilica Cathedral of St. Mary of the Assumption is a Gothic brick church with three naves, a narrower choir section, and twin towers on the western front. The building displays typical Gothic proportions and red brick masonry that defines the city's skyline.

Construction started in 1340 under Bishop Maciej Pałuka, replacing an earlier wooden church destroyed during a Teutonic raid in 1329. The project marked efforts to rebuild a major religious structure following a period of destruction.

The cathedral displays Gothic stained glass and houses a wooden figure of Mary from the early 1400s along with a notable altarpiece. These artworks shape the interior and reflect the artistic treasures gathered across centuries.

The cathedral serves as the main religious center of Włocławek diocese with regular services open to the public. Visitors can explore the interior spaces where historical displays and artworks are visible throughout.

Inside the cathedral lies a red marble tomb of a bishop created by renowned sculptor Wit Stwosz in 1494. This work demonstrates the exceptional craftsmanship and artistic skill of one of the most sought-after sculptors of the era.
