Szyb Carnall

The Carnall shaft is a coal mine with a steel headframe located in Zabrze and features a deep underground excavation. The installation also preserves an engine room where the original machinery for pumping and hoisting remains on display.

The facility was established in the 1850s and named after a prominent mining official who oversaw operations in the region. Over time, the shaft was expanded and upgraded to serve the growing coal extraction demands.

This shaft represents the mining legacy that shaped Zabrze into an industrial center for over a century. Walking through the preserved spaces, you encounter the everyday tools and structures that workers relied upon.

Access to the site involves navigating uneven surfaces and stairs in various sections. Wear sturdy shoes and dress for the weather, as some areas are partially exposed to outdoor conditions.

The shaft was deliberately reopened and extended to grant public access to historical underground workings that had been sealed for decades. This effort transformed a closed industrial site into a space where visitors can walk where miners once labored.
